Aspen Colorado was founded in 1879 and became the largest producer of silver in the world. Within a decade, Aspen became the third largest city in Colorado. 14 years after its founding silver was demonetized in 1893 and our money went from being backed by silver to being backed by gold. Aspen started it slow decline in the what we call the quiet years. Aspen went from around 12,000 people down to 200. In the mid 30s the local started skiing in Aspen and the rest is history.
